Commercial Vehicle Insurance

Who can insure a commercial vehicle?

Anyone can insure a commercial vehicle such as a van, but you will be restricted as to what insurers will be able to insure you if you are going to use the vehicle for private use. If the vehicle is used for commercial use such as delivery of goods and if you are a builder and it will be used to get from A to B then it is a lot easier to obtain insurance.

The main types of commercial vehicle are as follows:

Goods-carrying vehicles: these form the largest group of commercial vehicles.

What is a no claims bonus?

If you do not make a claim during your period of insurance cover, you are entitled to a discount on your annual premium, which increases until you have been claim-free for four or more years, at which point you may protect it.

A Protected No Claim Bonus will be unaffected by any claims you make. However, many insurers reserve the right to alter your premium following a claim or a motoring conviction.

If you remain claim free and have earned the maximum No Claim Bonus you may also be entitled to a loyalty discount on your premium. (However, you may lose this if you make a claim).

Windscreen cover is available for commercial vehicles but that is dependant on what insurance company and cover you have. Typically windscreen cover is a policy extra and is not available on a regular road risk policy.

What will reduce my van insurance premium?

Insurance companies have a number of ways to rate a risk but here are 3 ways of reducing our commercial vehicle insurance policy:

Signs, if your vehicle has signs on side panels and the back this will reduce your premium as it becomes less desirable by thieves as it is easily noticeable by police.

Safe drive Badge, if your vehicle has a sticker on the back that says ‘How’s my driving’ insurers will reduce the premium as people will obviously call the number.

Driving Convictions, insurance companies load premiums, meaning they add more money on top for people who have speeding convictions.
